For the City of Dortmund, I led the strategy and creative development of a sonic identity to support its positioning as “Die Einzige ihrer Art.”

The aim was to establish a distinctive, future-proof sonic presence that reflects the city’s bold, cosmopolitan character.

Our competitive analysis of cities revealed a landscape largely defined by short-term executions, restrained expression, and safe emotional territory. This exposed a clear opportunity to move beyond logo-centric approaches, toward a scalable system with a bold, contemporary voice and a more distinctive, full-bodied emotional presence.

cultural insight

The cultural insight comes from the phonetic cadence of “DORT–MUND” (“Doatmund”), shaped by the rhythm and tone of Ruhr German, a dialect forged through industry, migration, and everyday exchange. Direct, percussive, and full of character, it carries a raw roundness.

This phonetic identity becomes a cultural anchor for a city defined by movement, pragmatism, and attitude, where expression lands fast, hits hard, and sounds Dortmund unmistakably.

We built a sonic ecosystem that translates Dortmund’s identity into a scalable auditory language. Rather than isolated assets, it operates as a modular system designed to evolve consistently across touchpoints.

At its core, the sound logo condenses the cadence of “DORT–MUND” into a bold, energetic, and unmistakable pulse. This becomes the anchor of a sonic identity that moves beyond neutral conventions.

From there, the system expands into a unified toolkit: sonic icon, brand music packaging, and editorial formats, balancing consistency with flexibility. The result is a cohesive, dynamic expression of Dortmund as a city in motion, with a sound that is distinctly its own.

The sound logo is defined by a vibrant onset and two central hits, echoing the “DO” mark and the phonetic cadence of “DORT–MUND.”
